What is a SMSF?
SMSF's are independently managed superannuation funds, designed to provide benefits to members of the fund when they retire (or to a member's family if the member dies, or suffers serious disability).
Where SMSF's differ from 'regular' funds such as industry/retail funds is that the members are also the trustees, meaning they control the investment decisions and the payment of benefits to members.
Because the purpose of the fund is to provide income in retirement and also to ensure that the savings are protected, there are rules that must be followed by the trustee(s).
A decision to set up a SMSF is an important one, so you should seek appropriate advice from qualified professionals before doing so.
